Legislative Update for Week Ending August 26, 2016

Lawmakers remained in their home states and districts this week to continue the seven-week congressional recess.

Congressional Recess Continues

This week, Members of Congress remained in their home states and districts to continue the seven-week summer recess. They are expected to return to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, September 6th. In the meantime, most Members of Congress will be holding town hall meetings in their home states and districts. TSCL encourages its members and supporters to attend these events and to ask questions of their elected officials about important Social Security and Medicare issues, like the following three…

1. This year, Social Security beneficiaries received no COLA despite a national survey indicating a majority reported higher costs. Do you support legislation that would give seniors an emergency COLA before the end of this year?

2. The federal government negotiates prescription drug prices for Medicaid and for veterans, but it is not allowed to negotiate lower prices for Medicare beneficiaries. Do you support this policy?

3. Experts estimate that fraud, waste, and abuse within Medicare costs more than $60 billion each year. What efforts do you support to ramp up prevention?

The following Members of Congress, among many others, will be holding town hall meetings this week: Sen. Charles Grassley (IA), Rep. Blake Farenthold (TX-27), Rep. Tom Graves (GA-14), Rep. Doug LaMalfa (CA-1), Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-15), Rep. Robert Pittenger (NC-9), Rep. Michael Conaway (TX-11), Rep. Susan Brooks (IN-5), Rep. Tom Cole (OK-4), Rep. Bill Flores (TX-17), Rep. Todd Rokita (IN-4), Rep. Steve Cohen (TN-9), and Rep. Raul Labrador (ID-1).
