The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) Responds to Social Security Trustees Report: Urges Swift, Bipartisan Action to Protect Benefits
The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), one of the nation’s leading nonpartisan advocacy groups for seniors, is urging Congress to take immediate and decisive action in response to the newly released Social Security Trustees Report, which highlights the urgent need to strengthen the program for both current and future retirees.
According to the 2025 Trustees Report, the combined trust funds that pay retirement, survivor, and disability benefits are projected to fall short of fully covering payments by 2034. At this point, only approximately 80% of the scheduled benefits would be payable. TSCL warns that failure to act soon will make future solutions more painful and disruptive.
The projected shortfall in Social Security, highlighted in the 2025 Trustees Report, is a looming crisis that demands immediate attention. With the trust funds set to be unable to fully cover benefits in less than 10 years, millions of retirees, disabled Americans, and survivors who rely on Social Security could face deep reductions in their monthly checks.
This isn’t a distant concern; it’s a rapidly approaching reality that will affect today’s workers and retirees. The report paints a stark picture: unless Congress acts soon, benefits will be slashed to just 80% of the scheduled amount, a cut that could push many seniors deeper into financial instability.
Now is the time for bold, bipartisan action before the damage becomes irreversible.
Key Points from the 2025 Trustees Report:
• Trust fund depletion projected by 2034.
• Upon depletion, only 80% of the benefits would be payable.
• Delaying action will only increase cost and difficulty.
TSCL urges Congress to adopt fair, phased-in reforms. If Congress waits, it may be forced into crisis decisions, risking steep cuts or tax hikes.
