Holiday Recess Continues
Lawmakers in the House and Senate remained in their home states and districts this week to continue the holiday recess. Members of the Senate are expected to return to Capitol Hill on Monday, January 6th, and Members of the House will return on Tuesday, January 7th.
Lawmakers will return to Washington with a busy schedule. Only one week remains before both chambers must consider a $1.012 trillion omnibus to fund the federal government through the rest of the fiscal year. Should they fail to approve it before the looming deadline, the federal government will face another shutdown on January 15th.
Despite the time constraints, top appropriators in both chambers are optimistic that the omnibus will win passage, and to speed up the process, leaders have agreed to avoid contentious policy riders. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (MD), Chairwoman of the Appropriations Committee, has said she “hopes” the House will adopt it by Tuesday, January 10th, so that the Senate can take it up on Friday, the 13th – two days before the current continuing resolution is set to expire.
