This week, voters went to the polls to cast their votes in the midterm elections. House and Senate lawmakers are expected to return to Capitol Hill to begin the “lame duck” session on Tuesday, November 13th.
House Majority to Change Hands in 116th Congress
On Tuesday, November 6th, voters went to the polls to cast their votes in the midterm elections. In the House, Democrats gained at least thirty seats and will take control in the 116th Congress. In the Senate, Republicans increased their majority, picking up at least two additional seats. At the time of writing this week’s legislative update, several races remained too close to call.
With the midterm elections behind them, House and Senate lawmakers will return to Washington next week – on Tuesday, November 13th – to begin the “lame duck” session. Both parties are expected to hold leadership elections before the 115th Congress comes to a close at the end of this year, and lawmakers also must pass a continuing resolution to keep most of the federal government operating past December 7th. Should they fail to reach an agreement in just a few weeks, the federal government will shut down.
Leaders in both the House and the Senate have announced that they hope to leave Washington for the remainder of the year by mid-December. In the meantime, The Senior Citizens League will continue to advocate tirelessly for legislation that would strengthen and protect the Social Security and Medicare benefits older Americans have earned and deserve.
