This week, Members of Congress adjourned for the Thanksgiving holiday. They are expected to return to Washington on Monday, December 1st.
Congress Adjourns for Thanksgiving
Lawmakers in the House and Senate returned to their home states and districts for the Thanksgiving holiday. The “lame duck” session will resume on Monday, and lawmakers will continue working on legislation to fund the federal government past December 11th.
Leaders in Congress originally hoped to pass a government-wide omnibus so that they could begin the 114th Congress with a blank slate, but as the deadline nears, it appears as though a short-term continuing resolution is more likely. When they return to Capitol Hill on Monday, lawmakers will have only ten days to sort out a dozen unfinished spending bills.
If they succeed, the issue won’t be revisited until October 1st, the start of the next fiscal year. However, should they fail, they will need to pass a temporary stop-gap funding measure or be prepared to face another government shutdown, which could affect Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries negatively.
