Activism After Retirement

Mahal May

For some people, retirement years are just as busy as work years. That’s the case for 68-year old activist Mahal May. She does the hula and belly dances with the “Showstoppers,” a group of more than 45 “chronologically-gifted” volunteer entertainers aged 60 to 93, performing in Maryland and Virginia area senior centers, nursing homes and county fairs. In 2012 at 65 she was crowned Ms. Maryland Senior America. And every Friday she and several other members of her Rotary Club fill more than 100 backpacks, sending the neediest school children home with “Bountiful Backpacks” filled with enough non-perishable food items to sustain the children and their families throughout the week.
